December 13 - Santa Lucia Day

Lussekatter (Lucia Cats - sweet saffron buns) are traditionally served in Sweden on St. Lucia Day. One of the girls in the family places a crown of candles on her head and carries a tray of the buns to serve to family and guests. Lucia Cats are wonderful! Apparently, it is not normal to slather them with butter, but hot Lucia Cats with butter and honey is delicious...

St. Lucia came from a wealthy family in the early days of Christianity and lived in Syracuse during the Diocletian persecutions of A.D.304. Legend has it that she refused to marry and chose instead to donate her dowry to the poor. Another legend says that she carried bread to feed the then persecuted Christians who were hiding in nearby caves. To light her way, she wore a crown of candles.
